The pixel-art style of The Rookie

Readable silhouettes first, detail second. Everything you see in the game is original pixel art.

Identity

The art is warm, slightly comedic and built around a rundown fighting school. It follows a few rules so that everything looks like it belongs together.

  • A fixed palette. All art draws from a shared set of 32 colours, called Rookie32.
  • One-pixel dark outline on characters and items, with light coming from the top left.
  • Fighters are 96 × 96 pixel frames, around 60 pixels tall, drawn facing right; the opponent is mirrored.
  • Icons are 16 × 16 pixels and designed to read at 64 pixels on a phone.
  • The game is portrait at a 270 × 480 reference size, scaled by whole numbers so every pixel stays crisp.

Animation

Fighters have idle, attack, block, dodge, hit, defeat and victory animations. Pets have idle, attack, hit, defeat and run. Faster fighters animate faster, which is only visual.

What you can see on this site

The sprites in this wiki are the game's own art, scaled up without smoothing. The idle animations you see on the fighters and the pets are the real in-game loops.

Original work

The Rookie takes inspiration from the mechanics and tone of classic browser auto-fighters. Names, characters, weapons, icons, fonts, colours and texts are all original; nothing is copied or traced.
